Modern life is filtered – through the media, Internet, electronic communication, photographs – everything is experienced through an intermediary. Direct observation is essential to me. There is something quietly profound in deciphering what is happening visually in the real world, paring it down to essentials, and trying to translate that into paint. The more honestly I convey what I see, that truth will surpass anything I could have preconceived. When I am most successful with a painting, I believe it’s that fundamental authenticity that resonates with the viewer.

Inspired by the light and life of Long Island’s East End, I began oil painting when I moved there in 2007. From open fields and farm stands, from boats and inlets to fish markets, the culture of the surrounding area all serves to inform my paintings.
